Voices & pronunciation

Choose your workspace's AI narrator and delivery, override it for one video, and teach it how to say product names.

Every narrated video and story video is voiced by an AI narrator. You set a default voice and tone for the whole workspace, change them for a single video when it needs something different, and keep a pronunciation dictionary so product names and acronyms come out right every time.

Set the workspace voice

  1. In the sidebar, click Settings.
  2. Scroll to Voice & narration.
  3. Under Voice, click the play button next to a voice to hear it, then select the one you want. There are 13 voices: Alloy, Ash, Ballad, Coral, Echo, Fable, Nova, Onyx, Sage, Shimmer, Verse, Marin and Cedar.
  4. Under Tone, pick how the narrator delivers the script:
    • Friendly: warm walkthrough, not salesy. This is the default.
    • Professional: calm, credible, enterprise.
    • Energetic: upbeat launch video.
    • Calm: patient tutorial.
    • Authoritative: keynote, bold claims.
  5. Click Save voice settings. New voiceovers use these settings.

Voice previews use the tone you've selected, so choose a tone first if you want to hear the combination.

Note

Only workspace owners and admins can change these settings. Other members see them but can't edit. See Members & roles.

How story tone affects the voice

A story video has its own Tone (professional, playful, bold or minimal), chosen when you create it. That tone also sets the narrator's delivery, in place of the workspace tone:

Story tone Narrator delivery
professional Professional
playful Energetic
bold Authoritative
minimal Calm

The workspace voice still applies. To use a different tone for one story, override it as described below.

Override the voice for one video

Changing a single video doesn't affect the workspace default or any other video.

For a narrated video:

  1. Open the video in the editor and click Voice in the left rail.
  2. Pick a voice and tone. Workspace default and Default follow the workspace settings.
  3. The choice saves straight away and applies the next time you render the video.

Script lines you haven't changed reuse their audio, so re-rendering after small edits is quick. See Script & voice.

For a story video:

  1. Open the story and click the Narration tab.
  2. Open Voice & tone at the bottom of the panel and pick a voice and tone.
  3. Click Apply to all scenes. Every scene is re-voiced with the new settings.

See Edit scenes & chat-to-edit for editing individual narration lines.

Add pronunciations

Plan

The pronunciation dictionary is available on Starter and up.

The AI narrator reads text as written, so brand names, acronyms and jargon can come out wrong. The Pronunciation dictionary, also under Settings › Voice & narration, tells it what to say instead.

  1. Click Add pronunciation.
  2. In the first box (Written as), type the word as it appears in your scripts, for example SaaS.
  3. In the second box (Say it as), spell it the way it should sound, for example sass.
  4. Click the play button at the end of the row to hear it in a short sentence. Adjust the spelling until it sounds right.
  5. Add more rows as needed, then click Save voice settings.

To delete an entry, click the bin icon at the end of its row.

How matching works:

  • Matching is whole-word and case-insensitive. An entry for SaaS also matches saas, but not a longer word that contains it.
  • Longer entries win. If you have both TurtleScene and TurtleScene AI, the longer phrase is used where it appears.
  • A workspace can hold up to 100 entries. Written as allows 60 characters and Say it as allows 120.
  • Pronunciations apply to every voice and every video in the workspace. They change only what is spoken, never the script text or captions.

Pronunciations take effect the next time audio is made: when you render a narrated video, save a story narration line, or apply a voice change. Videos you've already rendered keep their audio until then.

Tip

Try spelling out the sounds, with spaces or hyphens between syllables if needed: Kubernetes → koo-ber-net-eez, SQL → sequel.

If your plan changes to Free, saved pronunciations stop being applied but aren't deleted. They apply again after you upgrade.
