Record your screen
Capture a flow through your product in the browser, or upload a video you already have, and keep it or turn it into a demo.
Every narrated video, recording-based clickable demo and screen-based story video starts with a recording of your real product. You record in the browser from the create wizard, with nothing to install, or upload a screen recording you already made. This page covers both.
Before you start
- Use a desktop browser that supports screen sharing, such as Chrome or Edge. If yours doesn't, the recorder says Your browser does not support screen recording.
- Your product must open in a browser tab or window, since that is what you share.
- Sign in to your product first, so the login screen isn't in the recording.
- Know your plan's length limit: 3 minutes on Free, 5 on Starter, 10 on Studio and 20 on Team. The recorder shows it before you start.
For advice on getting a clean take, see Recording tips.
Open the recorder
- In the sidebar, click New capture. The New capture page opens at the Capture step.
- Click Record screen. The Record your screen panel opens.
The other options on this page are Start from anything (a story video from a description, documents or screenshots), Upload a video (a screen recording you already have, see below), Upload screenshots (a clickable demo from images) and, once you have recordings, Use a recording you already made.
Record a flow
- In App to record, enter your product's web address, for example app.yourproduct.com. If your workspace has an App URL saved in Product brain › App Access, the field starts with it; changing it here doesn't change the saved one.
- Click Open app, or press Enter. Your product opens in a separate window. Come back to the TurtleScene tab.
- Optionally tick Record my microphone if you want to talk through the steps (see below).
- Click Start recording. Your browser asks what to share.
- Choose the tab or window showing your product and confirm.
- Walk through your flow in the product window. Back in TurtleScene, a red Recording… bar shows the time so far and your plan's limit.
- When you're done, come back to TurtleScene and click Stop. Stopping sharing from your browser's own controls also ends the recording.
The window TurtleScene opened for your product closes when you click Stop.
Above the microphone option, the panel may say Extension not detected — hotspots will be inferred from video frames. That's expected. You don't need to install anything: TurtleScene finds your clicks by analysing the recording.
In the last 30 seconds, the recorder shows how many seconds are left. At your plan's limit it stops by itself and keeps everything recorded up to that point.
Record your microphone
The Record my microphone option is off by default. Turn it on when you want to guide the narration in your own words.
Your voice is never in the finished video: an AI voice always reads the script. What you say is used only if you choose Use what I said while recording on the editor's Script tab, which turns your speech into a cleaned-up script for the AI voice. See Script & voice.
If you don't plan to narrate, leave it off. An open microphone mostly records room noise.
If you turn the microphone on, your browser may ask for permission to use it. If you decline, the recording still starts, just without your microphone.
Review the recording
After you click Stop, a preview of the recording plays in the panel.
- Watch the preview to check the whole flow was captured.
- Optionally enter a name in Name (optional). If you save to Recordings without one, it's named after its length, such as "Recording — 1:42". If you continue to a demo, the name becomes the suggested demo title.
- Choose what to do next:
- Next takes you to Choose an output, where you pick Demo video + interactive demo or Story video.
- Save to Recordings stores the recording in your workspace without making anything yet, and opens the Recordings page with it highlighted.
- Discard & re-record throws the take away and takes you back to Start recording. Nothing is uploaded.
You can also save on the next step: Choose an output has a Not now — save to Recordings button for a fresh recording.
Upload a video you already have
If you've already recorded the flow with another tool, such as QuickTime, Loom or OBS, upload the file instead of recording again. From then on it works exactly like a recording made here: the same outputs, the same editor and the same credit.
- Formats: MP4, WebM or MOV. A MOV file, or an MP4 that browsers can't play, is converted to MP4 when it's uploaded.
- File size: up to 500 MB. If your file is bigger, export it at a lower resolution or trim it first.
- Length: the same limit as a recording on your plan (3 minutes on Free, 5 on Starter, 10 on Studio and 20 on Team).
- In the sidebar, click New capture.
- Click Upload a video. The Upload a video panel opens and shows your plan's length limit.
- Drop your file on Drop a video here, or click the area to browse.
- Watch the preview to check it's the right video. If your browser can't preview the file, the panel says so; it's converted when you continue.
- Optionally change Name (optional). It starts as the file name and becomes the suggested demo title.
- Click Next to go to Choose an output, or Save to Recordings to keep it for later. Choose a different file starts again.
If the video is longer than your plan allows, the panel says so before anything is uploaded. The file is uploaded when you click Save to Recordings or finish setting up a demo or story from it.
Clicks are found by watching the video, so the advice in Recording tips applies to an uploaded video too: one flow, a pause on each screen before you click, and no private data on screen.
What saving costs
A recording, or a video you upload, uses one AI recording from your monthly allowance when it's uploaded: when you click Save to Recordings, or when you finish setting up a demo or story from it. That same credit covers the first demo or story you make from the recording, so saving now and making something later costs the same as making it straight away. See Plans, credits & limits.
If you click Back on Choose an output before saving, TurtleScene asks whether to discard the recording. A fresh take that you discard is gone; save it to Recordings if you might want it later.
If screen sharing doesn't start
If you cancel the browser's share dialog, or your computer blocks the browser from sharing the screen, the recorder shows Screen sharing didn't start.
On macOS, the browser needs permission to record the screen:
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen Recording (called Screen & System Audio Recording on newer versions of macOS).
- Turn it on for your browser.
- Quit and reopen the browser, then try again.
If the upload is refused, the message says why. A recording longer than your plan allows is rejected with a note of its length; record a shorter take, or upgrade from Plan & billing. An uploaded video is also refused if it's over 500 MB, isn't an MP4, WebM or MOV file, or can't be read or converted; exporting it again as MP4 (H.264) usually fixes the last two. If you've used all your AI recordings for the month, the message says when new ones become available. For other problems, see Troubleshooting.
