Custom domains

Serve your clickable demos from your own subdomain, such as demos.yourcompany.com, with two DNS records and HTTPS.

A custom domain lets viewers open your clickable demos on an address you own, such as demos.yourcompany.com, instead of a TurtleScene link. Viewers see your company's name in the link, in emails and on your website.

Plan

Custom domains are available on Studio and up.

How it works

You pick a subdomain, add two DNS records where your domain is managed, and TurtleScene checks them. Once both records are in place, you click Switch on HTTPS, which connects the domain to your workspace, and we set up the certificate.

A domain belongs to one workspace: the first workspace to connect it keeps it, and only that workspace's public clickable demos are served on it:

  • https://demos.yourcompany.com/ opens the demo you set the domain on.
  • https://demos.yourcompany.com/<demo slug> opens any other public demo in the same workspace.

Use a subdomain (for example demos. or tour.), not your main website address. The records point that subdomain at TurtleScene, so it can't also serve your website.

Enter your domain

  1. In the sidebar, click Library and open a clickable demo.
  2. In the editor toolbar, click Personalize, then open the Integrations tab.
  3. Under Custom domain, type the subdomain, for example demos.yourcompany.com. Leave out https://. A setup box appears under the field with the two records to add; their values say "(check to show)" for now.
  4. Click Check DNS. The Value column fills in with the exact values for your domain.

Add the DNS records

Add both records where your domain's DNS is managed (GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Route 53 and so on). Copy each value with the copy icon next to it, so nothing is mistyped.

Type Name Value
CNAME Your subdomain, for example demos The address shown in the setup box
TXT asuid. plus your subdomain, for example asuid.demos The verification code shown in the setup box

The CNAME sends visitors to TurtleScene. The TXT record proves the domain is yours, so the certificate can be issued.

Warning

If you use Cloudflare, set the CNAME to "DNS only" (grey cloud), not proxied. A proxied record hides the real target, and the check can't see it.

Check the records

  1. Go back to the Integrations tab and click Check DNS.
  2. Look at the icon at the end of each row. A tick means the record is in place; a cross means it isn't visible yet.

DNS changes can take up to an hour to show. If a row still has a cross, wait a few minutes and click Check DNS again.

If the check says your domain "points somewhere else", the CNAME exists but has the wrong value, or there's an older record for the same name. Change it to the value shown in the setup box and remove any other record for that name.

Switch on HTTPS

When both records have a tick, a Switch on HTTPS button appears.

  1. Click Switch on HTTPS. You'll see "Request sent. We'll switch on HTTPS for this domain within one business day and email you."
  2. Wait for our email. We set up your domain and its certificate on our side, which is why this step isn't instant.
  3. Click Check DNS again once you've heard from us. When it's done, the box says "HTTPS is on." and your share links on the new domain work.

If the button says the records aren't visible yet, TurtleScene checked them again when you clicked and couldn't see both. Wait a few minutes, click Check DNS, and try again.

If another workspace has already connected the domain, the check says so and you can't connect it here. If the domain should be yours, email us with the domain name.

Note

Keep both DNS records in place after HTTPS is on. Removing them takes your demos offline on that domain.

Make sure demos are public

A custom domain only serves demos that are public. For each demo you want on the domain, open Personalize › Share and check that Public link enabled is on. See Share & embed.

If you change plan or domain

  • If your workspace moves below Studio, the custom domain stops serving demos. Your TurtleScene share links keep working.
  • If several demos have the same domain set, the address without a slug opens the most recently updated one.
  • To stop using a domain, clear the Custom domain field and remove the two DNS records. Existing links on that domain will stop working, so update anywhere you've shared them.

If the check keeps failing after an hour, see Troubleshooting, or contact us with the domain name.
